Knee pain is typically treated with activity modification, painkillers and other non-surgical treatment options like physical therapy. Pre-Operative Care

Once you decide to move forward with a knee replacement surgery, you will need to complete your preoperative surgical clearance.  This may consist of a number of diagnostic tests and physical examinations. The doctor may check your medical history and the medicines you take. You will also complete a joint replacement education class with our joint replacement coordinator

Procedure

During total knee replacement surgery, a knee surgeon replaces the unhealthy or damaged knee with an artificial joint, commonly called “prosthetic”. Though the surgical procedures differ, depending upon the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s approach, the procedure generally takes around 2 hours.

Risk and Complications

Like any other surgery, there are risks associated with total knee replacement surgery, such as infection, blood clots, nerve injury, and prosthesis problems like dislocation or loosening. To minimize the risks associated with knee replacement surgery, our joint replacement coordinator and your surgeon will advise you on the precautions you need to take after the surgery.

Post-Operative Care

Exercises and physical therapy are integral parts of the recovery process. It is, therefore, essential for patients to follow a physical therapy and exercise routine after the surgery, as recommended by their knee surgeon in Plano. It is also advisable to put a pillow beneath the knee while lying down, and avoid kneeling on the new knee joint and doing deep squats.
